Three US states are voting to decide whether to approve proposals to legalise the possession and growth of small amounts of marijuana for recreational use.
If residents in Washington, Colorado and Oregon approve the measures, the states could become the first to make such use of the drug legal.
The proposals would mean marijuana would be taxed and available to purchase in special stores to adults aged 21 and over.
Yet, concerns have surfaced over the possible abuse of a drug that the federal government deems dangerous, especially in the hands of drivers who will use while on the road and teens.
The three states, along with 14 others already allow the use of medical marijuana.
